Animation of molten rocky bodies colliding in the early Solar System. The planets formed from the collisions of dust and rocks, which formed smaller bodies known as planetesimals, which themselves collided to form protoplanets, which melted, leading to the differentiation of their interiors. Collisions between these large objects eventually formed the planets that remain today. See clips K002/4964 and K002/4971 for the stages before this, and K002/4979 for the later final stage. | |
