Pumpjacks (also known as grasshopper pumps and nodding donkeys) work non-stop in this oil field in southern California. They are used to lift liquid out of oil wells when there is not enough pressure for the oil to rise on its own. A pumpjack can lift as much as 40 litres of oil-water mixture with each stroke. | |
