El Capitan, a massive granite rock formation, rises more than 900 meters above the forested Yosemite Valley in California. El Capitan is excellent example of a pluton, an intrusive igneous rock body created through volcanism. Following their fiery birth, El Capitan and other plutonic formations in Yosemite were then thrust upward by the forces of plate tectonics and carved by glaciation. Known for its spectacular scenery, the eleven kilometer-long valley attracts millions of visitors from throughout the world each year. | |
