Camera tilts up the vertical face of El Capitan, a massive granite rock formation that rises more than 900 meters above the forested Yosemite Valley in California. El Capitan is excellent example of a pluton, an intrusive igneous rock body created through volcanism. Following its fiery birth, El Capitan, and other plutonic formations in Yosemite were thrust upward by the forces of plate tectonics and then carved by glaciation. Known for its spectacular scenery, the eleven kilometer-long valley attracts millions of visitors from throughout the world each year. | |
