View of walled-in doorway at Pueblo Bonito, the largest Anasazi structure in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. No one is sure why some doorways were walled in, but it may have been door for defensive purposes. Pueblo Bonito once stood five stories high and had as many as 800 rooms, possibly housing as many people. Once considered something of a prehistoric apartment building, anthropologists now think it may have served as a ritual center. Pueblo Bonito was constructed in the mid 800s and was abandoned, along with other buildings in Chaco Canyon, about 1200 A.D., possibly in response to depletion of resources and or drought. | |
