A summer storm produces lightning in this view of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, the land of the Lakota tribe. Scientists aren't in agreement on how lightning occurs, but the movement of ice particles within a cloud is thought to play an important role in producing positive and negative charges that result in an atmospheric discharge of electricity we call lightning. In Lakota mythology, lightning and thunder is caused by the the two-horned god, Haokah. | |
