Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacting Jupiter. This event occurred in July 1994, and was the first direct observation of the collision between two bodies in the Solar System. The impacts caused huge Earth-sized dark spots in the atmosphere of Jupiter, which persisted for several months after the collision. Observations from Earth and spacecraft provided a huge amount of new data about the composition of Jupiter's atmosphere. | |
