Movement of the continents resulting in the formation of Antarctica. The southern continents formed a supercontinent called Gondwana, which began breaking up around 170 million years ago, with the movement of Australia, India and Antarctica away from Africa. Once Antarctica has separated from the others, the ring of open sea allowed the formation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (light blue lines), which circles the globe from west to east around Antarctica and keeps the continent cold by preventing warm water from reaching it. | |
