Animation of the early Moon orbiting in a debris ring around Earth. It is thought that the Moon was formed when a Mars-sized body impacted the early Earth some 4.5 billion years ago. The impact was at a shallow angle, and led to a huge amount of material being thrown off the Earth, which coalesced into the Moon. At this stage the debris rains down on the Moon as it sweeps it up from the ring. | |
