Comet nucleus releasing gasses as it approaches and is warmed by the Sun. Comet nuclei are icy bodies from the outer solar system. If they are perturbed and approach the sun, its heat vaporises the volatile ices they contain, which form jets emanating from its surface, and surround the nucleus with a large diffuse cloud called a coma. The solar wind and radiation pressure can force this coma to blow away from the Sun, forming an extended tail. | |
