| Cave hyena (Crocuta crocuta spelaea) skull fossil. The cave hyena is closely related to today's spotted hyena. This species roamed from Western Europe to eastern Siberia and is one of the most well-known mammals from the Ice Age. The cave hyena primarily preyed on large mammals. The exact cause of its extinction remains unclear, but it likely resulted from a combination of factors, including climate change and competition with other predators such as wolves and modern bears. This fossil dates back to the Pleistocene period, 125, 000 to 10, 000 years ago. Found in Provence, France. | |
