Discoloured nails on a 37 year old female patient with longitudinal (lengthwise) melanonychia. Melanonychia is nail discolouration caused when the pigment cells, called melanocytes, deposit melanin (brown-coloured pigment) into the nail. There are several reasons why this could occur. It can appear due to an infection or injury, or as a sign of disease such as skin cancer. Treatment options for melanonychia will depend on the primary cause. | |
