Nipponites mirabilis ammonite fossil, an ammointe with a strange unrolled shell. Ammonite shells are usually formed into spiral. This specimen dates from the Maastrichtian age (72.1 to 66 million years ago) of the Late Cretaceous. Ammonites are extinct marine animals which lived between 380 and 65 million years ago. They are distantly related to the modern-day nautilus. They lived in coastal waters and inland seas. This specimen measures 10cm in length. Luc Ebbo, Paleogalerie, Salignac. | |
