Chapel of Notre-Dame du Haut, Ronchamp. The old hilltop chapel, rebuilt several times, was destroyed during the Second World War. A new chapel, designed by the renowned Swiss architect, Le Corbusier, was completed in 1955 and incorporates stonework from the original church. It is, though, for its creative use of concrete that it is architecturally famous. The massive concrete roof looks surprising light, almost like a thatched roof. Small windows glazed with stained glass cover the south wall and light the interior with brilliant colours. This modernist building, surrounded by woodland, attracts thousands of visitors to visit this pilgrimage chapel. | |
