| Charging by friction, 1 of 4. A metal leaf electroscope is used to demonstrate charging by friction. Initially the electroscope is not electrically charged and there are no charged objects nearby. The two aluminium metal leaves hang loosely at the end of the metal shaft. When a glass rod is rubbed against a silk cloth, the rod becomes positively charged through the triboelectric effect. Then the charged rod is brought close to (but not touching) the ball at the top of the shaft, the charges in the electroscope separate (electrostatic induction), causing the leaves to spread apart. When the glass rod then touches the ball, the charges are transferred to the ball and the electroscope becomes charged. Its leaves remain separated even after the rod is removed. | |
