The Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount in the Muslim Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, Israel. The Ottoman style Dome of the Rock is an Islamic shrine initially completed in the 690s. The original dome collapsed in 1015 and was rebuilt in the 1020s and the building has been restored many times since, notably with the addition of a gold-plated roof in 1959–61 and again in 1993. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has great religious significance in Judaism as the place where god created the first human, Adam, and Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac; the Prophet Muhammad, founder of Islam, is traditionally believed to have ascended into heaven from this site. | |
