Coloured pelvic ultrasound of a 40-year-old female patient showing a uterus in the normal anteverted (tilting forward towards the abdomen) position. The uterus is a normal size, measuring 92 mm in length and 52 mm in antero-posterior diameter. The ultrasound also shows a fitted intrauterine device (IUD, centre) in place. IUDs are thought to work by inhibiting the implantation of a fertilised egg. Some IUD's contain a progestogen drug that suppresses ovulation. IUD's are not as effective as the pill. | |
