Renal medulla, light micrograph. 0.5 micrometre thick section of material embedded in plastic, stained with toluidine blue. A characteristic element of the renal medulla are the interstitial cells. They appear as cells endowed with dense grains and are arranged perpendicular to the path of the medullary tubes (like the steps of a ladder). These cells secrete prostaglandins and medulipin. | |
