Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest of a patient with the blood disorder thalassemia. There are bilateral posterior mediastinal masses associated with medullary expansion of the anterior and posterior ribs. Extramedullary haematopoiesis is the process of blood cell production outside the medulla of the bones in response to inadequate circulating erythrocytes which fail to satisfy the oxygen demand of the body.
