High magnification micrograph of a human parathyroid gland showing oxyphilic cells. They are large cells, with a polygonal outline, with an eosinophilic cytoplasm of granular appearance. Electron microscopy shows that these cells are very rich in mitochondria. There is no known endocrine function for these cells. Among the cell cords, capillaries full of red blood cells stand out. | |
