Japan in the Mercator Hondius Atlas (Amsterdam, 1606). Jodocus Hondius the Elder (1563-1612), who published the Mercator Hondius Atlas, was a Flemish artist, engraver, and cartographer who purchased the plates of Gerard Mercator's Atlas from Mercator's grandson and republished them with 36 additional maps. The Mercator Hondius Atlas was a success and sold out within a year. | |
