Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of rod bacterium. Forming an endospore, bacteria which form endospores are capable of withstanding harsh conditions. Endospores are dehydrated cells with thick walls. The original cell replicates its chromosomes and capsule. The outer cell disintegrates but the endospore it contains is a resistant cell that survives carried trauma including lack of nutrients and water, extreme heat or cold and most poisons. Some spores may persist in this inactive state for centuries. Magnification: 75, 000x. | |
