Areas with sloping terrain occasionally see the ground slip away. There are a number of natural causes for this type of movement, which is called a landslide. Among them are major climate changes, which can bring sudden warm spring temperatures or heavy rainfall. Even geological activity deep inside the planet, such as an earthquake or volcanic eruption, can affect the ground above. Landslides can happen as a result of human activity, such as cutting down entire forests on a mountainside or building massive cities on unstable ground. Depending on the steepness of a slope, the nature of the soil, and the cause of the movement, these phenomena may take different forms, from landslips to mudflows, rockslides, or snow avalanches. | |
