Two of the Isole Borromee islands in Lago Maggiore, Isola Bella and in the background, Isola Pescatore. In 1632, Count Carlo lll Borromeo commissioned the Milanese architect, Angelo Crivelli, to create an island paradise for his wife Isabella d'Adda. A villa was set amongst the fountains, obelisks and statues of an Italian style Baroque garden, with rare flowers and plants integrated amongst ten terraces. The completion and inauguration of the gardens was in 1671. From a wood engraving signed by F.Bauer after Rudolf Schick, 1876. | |
