Model of the Mir space station. This Soviet space station was launched in stages, starting from February 1986. Over the next few years, additional modules were added to the space station. Mir spent 15 years in orbit around the Earth, being used by Soviet and then Russian cosmonauts to carry out numerous scientific experiments. After it was abandoned, it was deorbited on 23 March 2001, breaking-up over the Pacific Ocean. Photographed at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre, Star City, Russia. | |
