Light micrograph of the green alga Staurastrum sp. Staurastrum belongs to the order Desmidiales (ornamental algae) whose cells are divided by a central constriction into two radial symmetrical half cells. The cells have one axial chloroplast per half cell with usually one pyrenoid. Stained with Calcofluor white. In fluorescence contrast with UV excitation, the cell wall glows blue and the mucous pores of the cells whitish. The chlorophyll shows intense red fluorescence. Three cells in apical view. Microscopic contrast method : incident light fluorescence. Magnification 800x at a print width of 10 cm. | |
