Soyuz 4 approaching Soyuz 5 for the first docking of manned spacecraft on 16 January 1969. Soyuz 4 was launched on 14 January, carrying commander Vladimir Shatalov. Soyuz 5 was launched on 15 January carrying commander Boris Volynov and engineers Aleksei Yelisayev and Yevgeny Khrunov . When the craft docked in orbit, Yelisayev and Khrunov transferred to the Soyuz 4 craft for return to Earth, the first crew transfer made whilst docked. Soyuz 4 made an uneventful landing on 17 January. Soyuz 5 had to re-enter nose first due to a failure of the support module to separate, then the parachute lines got tangled and the landing rockets failed to operate. Volynov suffered a few broken teeth as a result. | |
