19th century illustration of the ruins of ancient pillars on the island of Tinian, one of the Northern Mariana Islands. These distinctive stone structures, known as latte stones, were built by the ancient Chamorro people. They were built to support important structures in villages. The construction of the latte is thought to have begun in the 9th century AD. Illustration from Celebrated Travels and Travellers, by Jules Verne (1880). | |
