Map showing the location and masses of meteorite discoveries in Australia. The diameter of each blue circle indicates the relative mass of the meteor. The largest intact meteorite in Australia is The Mundrabilla meteorite which weighs 12 tonnes. Other notable large meteorites include the Cranbourne meteorite (13 fragments weighing a total of 8.6 tonnes), Huckitta (2.3 tonnes), Henbury (2 tonnes) and Wolfe Creek (0.76 tonnes). It is estimated that 6, 100 meteors hit Earth each year with most burning up before impact or falling into the oceans. Data based on NASA Meteoritical list of meteorite landings. | |
