Illuminated calligraphic manuscript, 16th century. The text (top) was produced by Hungarian calligrapher Georg Bocskay in around 1561 to 1562, with the illuminated illustrations added in the 1590s by Flemish artist Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1601). This page has illustrations of a sloth. The medium is watercolour and gold and silver paint and ink on parchment. This page is from the work 'Mira calligraphiae monumenta' (Model Book of Calligraphy), produced in Vienna for the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, and one of the last major examples of European manuscript illumination. | |
