The last 3 lines of the hieroglyphs in the â??Merneptah Steleâ?, a large monumental stone slab of ca.1207. Merneptah (or Merenptah), 4th pharaoh of the 19th dynasty, ruled Egypt from 1213 BC to 1203 BC. The other 25 lines of the text extol Merneptah's triumphs in 1208 after the attacks from Libya and suppressing revolts in the cities of Palestine. These 3 lines deal with a campaign in Canaan in which the term â??Israelâ? occurs. This was the first mention of the word in any Egyptian text. Its importance has aroused interest and research among Egyptologists since William Flinders Petrie found it in1896 while he was excavating the temple of Merneptah. Dr. Spiegelberg of Strasbourg University worked with Petrie on translating the inscriptions. He named various Syrian towns apart from 'Isirar' which Flinders Petrie identified as Israel â?? not the place, but the people. | |
