Ring of gas around magnetar SGR 1900+14 (centre). A magnetar is a type of neutron star with incredibly strong magnetised fields. The ring around SGR 1900+14 is 7 light years across. Scientists believe it may have been formed by an explosive burst of the magnetar in 1998.
