Refraction. Illustration showing how an object appears to be in a different position when submerged in water. This is due to the refractive power of the water. Light travels at different velocities in different media, and as light passes from one medium to another it appears to bend. The side of the container hides the object from the observer when no water is present. As light travels faster in air than in water, the image of the object under water (right) has been 'bent' away from its true position, making it visible from the observer's position.
