On June 8, 1946, following the London Victory Celebrations at the end of WW 2, King George VI sent a personal message to all the schoolchildren who lived during WW2 for having shared in the hardships and dangers of total war. Children had to endure air raids, gas masks, rationing, irregular schooling, the loss and injuries of close relatives and friends, etc. Nearly two million children were evacuated away from their home and family and one in ten of the deaths during the Blitz of London from 1940 to 1941 were children. | |
