Capillary action. Three small-diameter glass tubes (capillaries) and a larger reservoir tube are connected together at the bottom. The whole manifold is filled with colored water. The liquid is drawn up in the thin tubes due to capillary action. The effect is due to a combination of intermolecular cohesion within the liquid (surface tension) and adhesion between the liquid and the tube inner walls. The thinner the tube, the higher the liquid column. | |
