Dragonfish have an imposing appearance. This species, Astronesthes micropogon, has a considerable set of teeth, used for snaring smaller prey items. A glowing lure dangles from the end of the beabel which hangs off of the chin. The structure is used to lure prey items to within striking distance. This specimen was roughly eight inches in total length. It was trawled up in the Gulf of Mexico, 2018, from between 600 and 1, 000m depth. Image courtesy of the DEEPEND project. | |
