A comparison of two of the flatfishes that inhabit the Amazon River in Loreto, Peru. The Scrawled Sole (Apionichthys nattereri) TOP - was netted in the Loreto region of the Peruvian Amazon (2018). This species can be differentiated from the closely relates A. finis by the connective membrane that unites the caudal fin with the dorsal and ventral fins. These fishes inhabit sandy or muddy bottom areas where they can bury their bodies with their eyes protruding above the substrate. The American Sole (Achirus sp.) BOTTOM - was netted from a sandy bottom habitat in Amazonian Peru, 2018. There is no question that this species can complete its life cycle in freshwater as these animals are found over 2000 miles up the Amazon inside of Amazonian Peru. This individual (a juvenile) was photographed in Iquitos, Peru, 2018. | |
