The Red-eye Piranha (Serrasalmus rhombeus) is also known as the Black Piranha and the White Piranha juveniles may not have the characteristic red eyes of the adult form. This is one of many species inhabiting the drainage systems of the upper Amazon Basin in Peru. Much mythology surrounds piranhas but they are far more docile in most circumstances than their reputations suggest they are. Isolated oxbow lakes can create circumstances where piranhas have consumed most of the fishes with them these are circumstances to avoid. This individual was photographed in Iquitos, Peru, 2018. | |
