This fragment (actual length 13 cm) is one of many found of the Sikhote Alin meteorite that fell in south-eastern Russia in 1947. About 23 tonnes of this exceptionally large meteorite are estimated to have crashed into the Sikhote-Alin mountains. It is an iron meteorite with a coarse, octahedrite structure, with a mineral composition of about 93% iron, 5.9% nickel and traces of cobalt, phosphorus and sulfur. The impact happened during the day and was witnessed by many people, without anyone being hurt. | |
