Moraea tripetala photographed south of Nieuwoudtville in the Western Cape of South Africa. The species name, tripetala, means with three petals, referring to the three visible outer tepals. The inner petals appear to be absent, but are actually much reduced. Moraea resembles the Iris in many ways, but is not related to the northern hemisphere genus | |
