Illustration of a triangle weaver spider (Hyptiotes cavatus) catching its prey. This spider weaves a triangular net and then tethers itself to a branch while holding a taut anchor line and waiting for prey to hit the net. When the prey bumps into the net the spider releases the anchor line, catapulting itself and its web forwards, and capturing the prey. Holding the anchor line taut stores huge amounts of energy, resulting in the web accelerating faster than 770 meters a second squared, which is 26 times the maximum acceleration of the space shuttle. | |
