Map of the Moon by the Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687), published in 1647 in Selenographia, sive Lunae descriptio (Selenography, or A Description of The Moon). The map shows libration (the oscillation of the visible surface of the Moon), and lunar craters and maria. Markings for a coordinate system are round the rim of the Moon. This map was the standard work in selenography for the next hundred years. | |
