Illustration of asteroids and debris streaking through the atmosphere of an early Earth during the late heavy bombardment. This event is proposed to have occured approximately 4.1 to 3.8 billion years ago. It is thought that the outer gas giant planets migrated inwards, flinging material from the asteroid belt towards the Sun and the planets of the inner solar systems. The impacts melted Earth's surface and could have brought water and organic materials to the planet. | |
