Perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS) stain-repellent molecule. This molecule was developed as a replacement for perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) stain-repellent chemicals that were shown to be persistent organic pollutants and to be toxic to human and wildlife. However PFBS has since been shown to be persistent in the environment. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (grey), fluorine (green), oxygen (red), sulphur (yellow) and hydrogen (white). | |
