Small flares (bright) in the Sun's corona. This is one of the first images taken by the Solar Orbiter spacecraft, which launched in February 2020. It was taken at a distance of only 77 million kilometres, the closest that images of the Sun have ever been taken. The miniature flares, named 'campfires', are in the upper atmosphere, or corona, of the Sun. They may contribute to the heating of the corona, which at over one million degrees Celsius is much hotter than the surface of the Sun, which is 5, 500 degrees Celsius. Imaged by the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) on ESA's Solar Orbiter spacecraft, taken with the HRIEUV telescope on 30th May 2020. | |
