Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Candida albicans yeast cells. C. albicans is a single-celled fungus that reproduces asexually, with daughter cells budding from parent cells. It is normally harmless and is commonly found on the skin and mucous membranes of the mouth, digestive and respiratory tracts and the vagina. Antibiotic treatment or compromised immune function may, however, lead to C. albicans infection. Common candida infections include oral and vaginal thrush. Magnification: x7, 00 when printed at 15cm wide.
