First quantum computing-safe tape drive. This new IBM quantum computing-safe tape drive prototype is based on an IBM TS1160 tape drive and uses both Kyber (a secure key encapsulation mechanism) and Dilithium (a secure digital signature concept) in combination with symmetric AES-256 encryption. The new algorithms are implemented as part of the tape drive's firmware. Quantum computers are based on quantum mechanics and the principle of representing information using quantum properties, storing and manipulating data in units known as qubits, the basic unit of quantum information. This has the potential to massively increase computing power. Photographed on 12 August 2019. | |
