New island formed by Hunga Tonga volcano, 2017. In December 2014, the submarine volcano of Hunga Tonga, in Tonga in the South Pacific, erupted and produced plumes of ash, along with steam and rock. By January 2015, a new island had been formed, with its summit 120 metres above sea level. This view shows the crater lake from the summit rim. Photographed on 4-5 June 2017. | |
