Caturus is an extinct genus of fishes in the family Caturidae. This fossil specimen, Caturus furcatus, is from famed, fossil rich, Jurassic limestone deposits near Solnhofen, southeastern Germany, age circa 150 million years. The teeth and various parts of the skull stand out clearly, as do the fins and even the soft scales of the skin. The fossil on this limestone bedding plane is surrounded by fractures spawning dendritic mineralization of manganese and iron oxide. | |
