Mosquito nymph on the underside of the water's surface. The nymph stage of a mosquito's development is a mobile form. It breathes at the surface of the water with small appendages called respiratory trumpets, but does not feed. Nymphs usually stay on the surface of the water but dive as soon as they are disturbed,by suddenly unfolding and bending the abdomen ending with two swimming paddles. The compound eyes of the future adult are visible here. Several mosquito species are a vector for the transmission of major diseases. | |
